"What do you want?" Butler said, after the Rockets won 104-101 to take Game 1 of the playoffs. "A free throw? A 3-pointer? A layup? He got whatever he wanted in that game."

Harden dropped 19 first-half points, but he guided a path to victory with outbursts at the end of the third and fourth quarters, giving him 44 for the night. He sank 15 of 26 shots, and seven of 12 from long-range.

His crossover cleared away Derrick Rose for an uncontested dunk. His magnetic power opened a lane for an alley-oop pass to Clint Capela. He stopped on a dime for a 3 that caught Jeff Teague on his heels and stepped back for another that baited Andrew Wiggins into a fruitless lunge.

His dominance left the Toyota Center crowd full-throated and the Timberwolves certain that Harden will be voted the league's Most Valuable Player.

"You know why," Taj Gibson said. "Every time the game was mano y mano, he just took over."

Rose, a former MVP, respected the high-stakes takeover.

"That's when you have to pull up," Rose said. "That's when I want to see it. Play hard. I'm (going to) foul you. I want to see it all. Tonight he showed everything that he got."

The Rockets had seemed headed for a nosedive at the start of the second half. A missed shot and two turnovers quieted Harden on offense. The Timberwolves retook the lead with a 13-4 run.

The Rockets needed someone to turn the game around. With 4 minutes, 41 seconds left in the quarter, Harden nailed a 3 to tie the game at 65. His dunk tied the score again at 70. His 3 put the Rockets ahead by one point.

"We did a good job with everybody else, but he got going," Gibson said of Harden. "We were trying to throw everything at him."

Harden abused Rose, in particular. Harden's crossover made Rose collide into a pick and tumble to the floor. As Harden hammered in the dunk, Rose sat on his backside and rubbed his face, trying to figure out what went wrong.

Rose explained later that he felt "an elbow or a smack to the face" on the play.

"I didn't get hurt or lose a tooth," he said. "So I'm fine."

Harden poured in eight consecutive points to finish the quarter and put the Rockets ahead. They outscored the Timberwolves by nine points when Rose was on the court, where he had to chase a rocket that no one could contain.

"I mean, I'm doing the best I can, man," Rose said of guarding Harden. "He's the MVP right now. My job is just to irritate him. Try to get under his skin, pick him up full court, but at the same time, just compete."

It's an especially motley show today: a little of this, a little of that, thoughts from an old show, a new essay, some borrowed wisdom, and a BLUE stock pick. And, hey, what's that in your shoe?

On this Rule Breaker Investing podcast, Motley Fool co-founder David Gardner revives a theme he first used early last year, based on the classic rhyme for wedding luck: "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue." It suited the hodgepodge of points he wanted to make then and a similarly motley patchwork of ideas on his mind this week.

He opens with a short refresher course on a top educator's fundamental paradigms: Deborah Meier's five habits of mind. For something new, he offers up an essay he's been refining for the past year that speculates about the rise and fall of the strong nation-state and the two trends that will weaken and in some ways supplant it. Under the borrowed banner, he applies a trio of clever quotes to the art of investing. And for something blue, David takes matters quite literally and reviews why the Fool continues to recommend ticker BLUE, the volatile clinical-stage gene-therapy hopeful bluebird bio ( NASDAQ:BLUE ) and why he invests in companies like it.

Something big just happened I don't know about you, but I always pay attention when one of the best growth investors in the world gives me a stock tip. Motley Fool co-founder David Gardner and his brother, Motley Fool CEO Tom Gardner, just revealed two brand new stock recommendations. Together, they've the stock market's return over the last 13 years.* And while timing isn't everything, the history of Tom and David's stock picks shows that it pays to get in early on their ideas.

David Gardner: Welcome back to Rule Breaker Investing! I hope your May is proceeding along swimmingly. Speaking of, well, I hope not swimming, actually, but I am not in the country as I do this podcast. I am, again, probably not swimming in Norway and Iceland but having a great time there with my family. I hope you're going to get a chance sometime this summer to make some travel of your own.
